New Notre Dame LGBT Alumni Organization Promotes Same-Sex Marriage

We devote this bulletin primarily to the promotion of same-sex marriage by the Alumni Rainbow Community of Notre Dame (“ARC”), the new “affinity group” created by the Notre Dame Alumni Association that began operations January 1.

When the NDAA announced the establishment of ARC last fall, we explained why this amounted to official recognition of the unofficial Gay and Lesbian Alumni Association of Notre Dame (“GALA”) and predicted that ARC would continue GALA’s promotion of same-sex marriage.

It took but two months to prove us right.

As we show below, ARC, in partnership with GALA, will shortly renew on campus GALA’s annual tribute to gay marriage and gender reversal, while the NDAA independently is featuring alumni who champion same-sex marriage.

The Background

In a recent bulletin, we described the collaboration between the NDAA and GALA that resulted in the creation of ARC; the hostility of GALA to Catholic moral teaching; and the reasons to believe that ARC will in substance be a duplicate GALA empowered by official status and access to the entire alumni network.

Here are just a few of the salient considerations we identified:

  • Both the NDAA and GALA described the design and launching of ARC as a collaborative effort.
  • The chair of GALA, who is married to another man, is also the chair of ARC.
  • Most of the other members of GALA’s leadership team are also in same-sex marriages (as are at least half of ARC’s leadership team).
  • For many years GALA has honored one prominent champion of same-sex marriage after another at its annual awards dinner, many of them dissident Catholics.

The Coming ARC/GALA “LGBT+ Awards Weekend”

After a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, GALA has announced a resumption of GALA’s celebratory gathering in April at Notre Dame, this time in collaboration with ARC.

The notice was also posted on the NDAA’s Facebook “Notre Dame ClubHub,” a site “reserved for current Notre Dame Club leaders.”

As usual, the principal event will be an Awards Dinner.

And as usual, the recipients will be prominent adversaries of the Catholic Church on sex, marriage, and gender.

  • The Distinguished Alumni Award will go to Greg Bourke (’82), who, with his male spouse, was party to the litigation that resulted in the Supreme Court’s holding same-sex marriage to be a constitutional right.

We have recently reported in some detail on the publication and promotion by Notre Dame Press of Bourke’s autobiography in which he tells of the litigation, his praise by Father Jenkins, and his dissent from the teaching of the Catholic Church.

  • The Distinguished Service Award will go to Meghan Buell, a leading South Bend transgender LGBT activist who was formerly executive director of the LGBTQ Resource Center of Michiana and is currently the founding president of the Transgender Resources, Educational and Enrichment Center of South Bend.

A frequent speaker, Buell is quoted as having said that the “goals of South Bend” in “welcoming people of different backgrounds” “conflict with the religious principles of Notre Dame.”

  • Finally, the Congregation of Holy Cross will share the spotlight when Father Joseph Corpora is given the Outstanding Faculty/Staff Award in Support of the ND LGBTQ+ Campus Community. His public contribution to the cause was his call in The Notre Dame Magazine for a reconsideration of Catholic teaching on sex, marriage and gender.

Violation of USCCB Policy

There could scarcely be a clearer violation of the relevant policy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and a more obvious cause of scandal to the Notre Dame student community than the conferring of these awards upon Bourke and Buell.

The bishops have declared:

Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platform which would suggest support for their actions.

The violation will be inarguable. Bourke and Buell will be honored precisely because of their actions “in defiance of “the Church’s “fundamental moral principles.”

Mass and Communion

There is yet another USCCB policy that will be implicated.

The weekend will end with the 10 o’clock Mass in the Basilica, where Greg Bourke and his husband and many more same-sex married alumni will presumably come to the Communion table.

When they do, they will transgress the injunction of the nation’s bishops, renewed just last November, that persons who “knowingly and obstinately” reject the Church’s “definitive teaching on moral issues” should refrain from presenting themselves for Communion.

The reason is that

Reception of Holy Communion in such a situation is likely to cause scandal for others, weakening their resolve to be faithful to the demands of the Gospel.

Scandal

The scandal associated with the awards and Communion will be especially blameworthy because of its potential effect on Notre Dame LGBTQ students.

Many members of the student LGBTQ organization (PRISM) will doubtless be at the Awards Dinner and at the Mass.

They will have seen the University’s Alumni Association bestow awards on a same-sex married alumnus and a transgender for their activities hostile to Church teaching.

They will have seen a prominent CSC priest join in applauding the awardees.

Then they will see them and other same-sex married alumni and spouses receive Communion in Notre Dame’s Basilica at the hands of Notre Dame priests.

Who could blame those who want to be faithful Catholics and are struggling to live true to Church teaching for concluding that Notre Dame doesn’t seem to regard the Church’s teaching on sex, marriage and gender as very important and so why should they.

Scandal it surely will be, and in a university entrusted with the moral formation of those scandalized.

NDAA Senior Alumni Tribute to Same-sex Marriage

Apart from ARC, the NDAA is promoting same-sex marriage through its senior alumni “Project Real.”

In the recent “Love” phase of this project, the senior alumni publication Golden Domer featured the account of alumnus Jack Bergen of how he left his wife after 12 years of marriage; married a man (their hands with wedding bands above); “came out” to his ND classmates at their twenty-fifth reunion; became an active NDAA alumnus; and takes pride in his daughter, a lesbian Notre Dame alumna who married a lesbian Notre Dame classmate, and their children.

The Golden Domer cites this account as an example of “Love – Leverag[ing] our Catholic faith.”

Responsibility

Certainly the NDAA would not have acted on these radioactive issues without administration approval, and probably at its direction. The NDAA initially denied GALA’s petition for recognition after prolonged consideration, only then to reverse course. And its new LGBT direction corresponds to the sharp administration pro-LGBT turn we have described in a number of prior bulletins.

Concluding Note

Father Jenkins recently declared that his administration’s “first goal” is to “ensure that our Catholic character informs all our endeavors.”

Huh?

When you see bishop v. Bishop, cardinal v. Cardinal, and pope v. every validly elected Pope, know we must Stay Awake! Pray that Our Blessed Mother’s Immaculate Heart Will Triumph soon

Dear Blessed Mother Mary, Who Through Your Fiat, Affirmed The Filioque, and thus the fact that There Is Only One Son Of God, One Word Of God Made Flesh, One Lamb Of God Who Can Taketh Away The Sins Of The World, Our Only Savior, Jesus The Christ, thus there can only be, One Spirit Of Perfect Complementary Love Between The Father And The Son, Who Must Proceed From Both The Father And The Son, In The Ordered Communion Of Perfect Complementary Love, The Most Holy And Undivided Blessed Trinity (Filioque), hear our Prayer that Pope Benedict XVI and those Faithful Bishops In Communion With Christ and His Church, Through The Unity Of The Holy Ghost, will do The Consecration Of Russia to your Immaculate Heart, exactly as you requested. Although at the end of the Day, it is still a Great Mystery, It is no Mystery, that we exist, because God, The Communion Of Perfect Love, The Most Holy And Undivided Blessed Trinity, Exists. It has always been about The Marriage In Heaven and On Earth. “Blessed are those that are Called to The Marriage Supper Of The Lamb.”

I am heartsick every time I read about Notre Dame. Shame on you. I was not an alumni but always proud of the Catholic identity. It is so sad to see it sink into a terrible shell of its former self. Stop the push for homosexual agenda. Please reconsider the course you are on. I pray for that and you.

I remember when Notre Dame was a Catholic college. Once again, liberals ruin everything they touch.

willing to respect or accept behavior or opinions different from one’s own; open to new ideas.

      2.
relating to or denoting a political and social philosophy that promotes individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise.

The term “liberal”, although for some, serves as a badge of honor, can also serve as a badge of dishonor, for one can know through both our Catholic Faith and reason, that only The Truth Of Love can set us free and lead us to Salvation.

A political and social philosophy that “promotes individual rights, civil liberties, democracy (that serves for the Common Good), and free enterprise, can never be reconciled with the engaging in or affirmation of any act, including any sexual act, that regardless of the actors, denies the inherent Dignity of the human person as a beloved son or daughter and thus is not and can never be, an act of authentic Love that can be justified.

The question is, “Do you Love Me”. – Jesus The Christ, The Word Of Perfect Love Incarnate.

For only if we Love Christ, as Christ Loves us, can we Love our brother and sister according to The Word Of Love Incarnate.

What we are witnessing is a lack of Love, not a liberal outpouring of God’s Love.

Christ’s Sacrifice On The Cross will lead us to Salvation, but we must desire forgiveness for our sins, and accept Salvational Love, God’s Gift Of Grace And Mercy; believe in The Power And The Glory Of Salvation Love, and rejoice in the fact that No Greater Love Is There Than This, To Desire Salvation For One’s Beloved.
“Hail The Cross, Our Only Hope.”

And Pray that The True Pope will do The Consecration Of Russia to Our Blessed Mother’s Immaculate Heart, exactly as Our Blessed Mother requested, lifting The Veil, and healing the Schism that exists due to those who deny The Unity Of The Holy Ghost.

      Christ’s Eucharistic Prayer:

“20And not for them only do I pray, but for them also who through their word shall believe in me. 21That they all may be one, as thou, Father, in me, and I in thee; that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. (Filioque)

22And the glory which thou hast given me, I have given to them: that, they may be one, as we also are one. 23I in them, and thou in me: that they may be made perfect in one: and the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them, as thou hast also loved me. 24Father, I will that where I am, they also whom thou hast given me may be with me: that they may see my glory which thou hast given me, because thou hast loved me before the creation of the world.“

What does “Notre Dame” mean? We just affirmed a SCOTUS judge who can’t define the word “woman”? So, a man marrying a man does not have any meaning at all anyway.

Notre Dame is quickly Slouching Toward Gomorrah, as described in the book by that title written by Judge Robert H. Bork, who was “borked” by “fake Catholics” Senators Joe Biden and Ted Kennedy when he was nominated to the position of Supreme Court Justice and they did everything in their power to take him down. His book addressed Modern Liberalism and America’s Decline (the book’s sub title).

Written in 1996, the book proved to be quite prophetic as it provesd to be an unprecedented view of a culture in decline, a nation in such serious moral trouble that it’s very Foundation is crumbling, and Notre Dame is not only contributing to its demise, but leading the way to perdition, along with Holy Cross priest Father Joe Corpora. What would the Congregation of Holy Cross founders of Notre Dame, think of the current moral direction of Our Lady’s University.

Jesus Christ and His Church are the same today, yesterday, forever. We are reminded in the Bible that the Natural Law is written in our hearts.

Is it any wonder that chastisement is being dealt us with the Wuhan virus, the abortion-tainted,jab that doesn’t prevent Covid and.has resulted in numerous deaths and deformities; the threat of World War III? Notre Dame must generate fear of God, awe of His greatness, wonder and glory.

This is downright shameful and disgusting!

    First principles matter

“To whom much has been given, much will be expected.”

We, who are Baptized and profess to be Catholic, have been given The Greatest Gift of All, The Gift Of Faith, Through Jesus Christ, In The Unity Of The Holy Ghost.

Supernatural subsistence is constituted by the fact that The Catholic Church Is One, Holy, Catholic, And Apostolic, Through The Unity Of The Holy Ghost.

“It is not possible to have Sacramental Communion without Ecclesial Communion”, due to The Unity Of The Holy Ghost” (Filioque) for “It Is Through Christ, With Christ, And In Christ, In The Unity Of The Holy Ghost”, that Holy Mother Church, outside of which there is no Salvation, due to The Unity Of The Holy Ghost, exists.“

Our Call to Holiness, has always been a Call to be chaste in our thoughts, in our words, and in our deeds.
We are One Body, One Spirit In Christ, Through The Unity Of The Holy Ghost, both individually and in communion. We are Called to desire to be “Temples For The Holy Ghost”, in private and in public.

We can know through both Faith and reason, that the desire to engage in a demeaning act of any nature, does not change the nature of the demeaning act, nor can any demeaning act ever be respectful of the inherent equal Dignity, of our beloved sons and daughters, and thus be an act of Love.

Reordering persons according to sexual desire/inclination/orientation, sexually objectifies the human person, and denies our inherent Dignity as a beloved son or daughter, in direct violation of God’s Commandment regarding lust and the sin of adultery, due to a desire to justify the engaging in of sexual acts, that regardless of the actors, including if they are a man and woman united in marriage as husband and wife, demean the inherent Dignity of the human person, and can never be acts of authentic Life-affirming and Life-sustaining Love.

Love, which is always rightly ordered to the personal and relational inherent Dignity of the persons existing in a relationship of Love is devoid of every form of lust. A man is not Called to Love his wife, in the same manner that he is Called to Love his daughter, or his son, or his mother, or his father, or a friend.

The marital act is Life-affirming and Life-sustaining, and can only be consummated between a man and woman united in Marriage as husband and wife. Christ performed His First Miracle at The Wedding Of Cana, revealing The Sacred Heart Of Mary, and The Sacramental Nature Of Marriage, grounded in authentic Life-affirming and Life-sustaining Love. God desires that every Marriage be Holy and thus devoid of every form of lust.

What separates Marriage from every other form of Loving relationship is the ability and desire to exist in relationship as husband and wife. We can know through both Faith and reason, that when marriage no longer requires that a man and woman have the ability and desire to exist in relationship as husband and wife, any relationship can be defined as marriage if one so desires. When we no longer desire to protect and defend the Sanctity Of Marriage, grounded in The Sanctity of the inherent Dignity of every beloved son and daughter, from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death, then anything can become permissible, including the destruction of a beloved son or daughter residing in their mother’s womb.

“When the freedom to be creative becomes the freedom to create oneself, then necessarily the Maker himself is denied and ultimately man too is stripped of his dignity as a creature of God, as the image of God at the core of his being. The defence of the family is about man himself. And it becomes clear that when God is denied, human dignity also disappears. Whoever defends God is defending man.” – Pope Benedict’s Christmas Address 2012

Prayer for Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, who having made this statement, was immediately surrounded by the wolves, the atheist materialist over population alarmist globalists, for whom the inherent Dignity of the human person, first and foremost, as beloved sons and daughters, is viewed to be a burden, and not a Blessing.

Pray that Our Holy Father Benedict XVI, will be moved to a safe haven, far from the “madding crowd”, who deny The Unity Of The Holy Ghost, and thus The Divinity Of The Most Holy And Undivided Blessed Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Pray for those who suffer from a disordered sexual inclination, that they will heal their wounds, and see themselves as God Sees them, men and women, worthy of being treated with Dignity and respect in private as well as in public, because they are Loved by God, with a Perfect Everlasting Love that heals all wounds.

Supernatural subsistence is constituted by the fact that The Catholic Church Is One, Holy, Catholic, And Apostolic, Through The Unity Of The Holy Ghost.

24Father, I will that where I am, they also whom thou hast given me may be with me: that they may see my glory which thou hast given me, because thou hast loved me before the creation of the world.

25Just Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee. And these have known that thou hast sent me. 26And I have made known thy name to them and will make it known: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

8. Marriage is a Sacrament looks like Notre Dame would like to make sexual perversion a sacrament. Looks to me like Satan is in charge at Notre Dame.

  9. The Sycamore Club and all the above comments sound very much like the Pharisees. From Mark 7:7 “They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men” Please stop wasting your energy tearing down others based on rules created by humans and instead try to see all people as Jesus did, as people to love. You have more important work to do than focusing on these issues. God bless you!

    • That interpretation of Mark contradicts the Catholic Church’s living Tradition. But I suppose you already know that. In any event, it’s not the purpose of this bulletin to challenge Church teaching on homosexuality. We note in other places that, as Catholics, we are called to accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity persons with homosexual tendencies — against the scorn, hatred, and violence that they experience in our society which is condemned by the Church. However, the Church also teaches that homosexual acts are immoral and opposes same-sex marriage, which is the focus of this bulletin. Notre Dame, as a Catholic school, should not formally undermine Church teaching.

Notre Dame is no longer a unique and special place. Drop the pretense it is Catholic and just be the expensive secular university it is.

I thought the Alumni Association represented all alum equally. Now special status/recognition for a group that denounces the basic core of our Catholic beliefs. Time for Dolly Duffy and the Alumni Association to cancel the membership of ARC or be replaced by those who have the courage with St. Michael to defend our Faith!

It’s too bad the students appear to be more Catholic than are the priests at ND. Why pay thousands for this type of weird catholicity?

  14. Paul Joseph Devitt March 30, 2022 at 3:21 pm

The bending of the knee to all things woke and diversity, inclusion and equity (“Die”). Pushing away faithful Catholics while the University not only embraces modernism and all of its sins, but now celebrates it.

At Baptism and Easter, we hear and answer the words of our faith proclaimed, “Do you reject Satan? And all of his works?” Next year’s football slogan, how will you fight for Satan?

This movement at Notre Dame is not Catholic and can’t be made Catholic by trying to change God’s immutable law and nature because all the cool kids are down with it.

  15. Time to write off Notre Dame as a lost cause. Let it burn like Sodom and Gomorrah.
